The best way to know the heart of God is through His Word. As we study the Scriptures the Holy Spirit brings revelation to our lives. He opens our mind and our understanding. He also removes the veil that has kept us separated from His truth and helps us learn what God wants us to do. The writer of Proverbs was referring to this when he said that to find purpose is to find life (Proverbs 8:35). When we understand that His promises are for today, our faith immediately arises and we are able to conquer the impossible.
If we realize that the only road to attain a prosperous life is through contact with His Word, I am sure we will make every effort to spend greater time in it. We would stop running from one place to another, trying to get our daily provision. The Lord said, “With me are riches and honor, enduring wealth and prosperity” (Proverbs 8:18). Wealth is attained neither by force nor by our own ability, nor by the power of influence we may have. The thing that man desires the most, and wears himself out for, can be found in God. It is permanent wealth that is of real benefit to us and to our children throughout the generations. Moreover, there is no need for us to show off that we are honorable people, as the Lord Himself places us in positions of privilege. “My fruit is better than fine gold; what I yield surpasses choice silver” (Proverbs 8:19). The fruit that comes from God´s Word is far more valuable than refined gold, and our harvest will be more abundant than precious silver if we believe in it.
“I walk in the way of righteousness, along the paths of justice, bestowing a rich inheritance on those who love me and making their treasuries full” (Proverbs 8:20-21). The Lord wants to bless every area of our lives, yet we often resist His blessing. It is probably because we are used to doing everything in our own human strength and ability.
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
The Lord motivated His disciples to receive the Holy Spirit. Since the Holy Spirit was the one to guide them in all truth, Jesus said, “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that He will receive what He will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what He will make known to you” (John 16:13-15).
In the preface to his sermon on verse 15, Ralph Erskine makes a remarkable comment. He compares grace with the honey that makes the saints feel happy, sweetening their mouths and hearts. He says that in the Father, ‘honey is in the flower, and so distant from us that it does not let us take it out. Whereas in the Son, honey is in the honeycomb, ready for us in our Emmanuel, God-Man, the Word made flesh who says that everything the Father owns is Mine, and is Mine for you to use and enjoy it.’ Next, he says that honey is in the mouth. The Spirit takes all things to make an application, He shows them to us, He takes us to eat and drink together with Christ and to share all these things. Yes, not only to eat honey but also the honeycomb that is overflowing with honey. Not only His benefits, but also He Himself.
