“And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”
Exodus 3:9-10
Moses was one the greatest leaders in history. God had a specific purpose to be fulfilled through him; the freedom of His people. This task required a deep and powerful work in Moses’ character in order for him to be ready to carry out the mission that God’s was entrusting to him. It took the Lord forty years to shape his character, and afterwards, He revealed His purpose to Moses, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt” (Exodus 3:7a). Moses had experienced so many internal conflicts in the past that he was unable to believe he could be used as an instrument in God’s divine hands. He tried to shift the responsibility by presenting his argument to God, questioning who he really was. “But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” (Exodus 3:11). Doubt is often our first reaction when God first calls us.
The desert had already broken the old Moses. All of the pride he used to have after living in Pharaoh’s palace had disappeared. He wasn’t self-sufficient any longer, but a broken, humble and modest man who realized that he was unable to do anything by himself. God had to tell him, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain” (Exodus 3:12). The Lord tells us the same thing, “No matter what you think of yourself, I am with you. You won’t talk about yourself, but about Me.” You need His presence, and He needs a broken life laid out on His altar. If you surrender to Him, He will use you and you will become a channel of blessing for hundreds of people.
When a servant of the Lord experiences brokenness, his life is ready to fulfill God’s purpose on earth, because he will no longer have anything in himself to lean on, but all his strength will come from God, and He will receive all the glory for every victory.
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
A young man graduated from a Bible Institute and decided to consecrate his life to the Lord, to become a missionary in Africa. After being trained and when everything was ready for him to leave he suffered a car accident and lost a leg. Through tears he cried out to God, “God, my only wish is to preach the Gospel to the African cannibals. Why did you allow me to lose a leg?” God remained silent. However, he believed that all things work for the good of those who love him and are called according to His purpose. He obtained a prosthetic leg and with this, traveled to Africa. While he was preaching the Gospel there, he was captured by cannibals. The chief of the tribe gathered all the neighboring tribes for a party; the main dish for the night was to be this young white man. But the young man showed his rubber leg, and taking it off he threw it away saying, “I’m a white man but you won’t like my flesh; you will not enjoy it.” The cannibals ran to the rubber leg and began to chew it, quickly realizing it was inedible. Everyone started to leave the place as the chief of the tribe shouted, “This is not a man, but a god! How can his flesh be so hard and without flavor?” They all bowed down before the young man as a sign of repentance. However, he shared the Gospel with them and after hearing it the chief of the tribe brought back all the neighboring tribes and they repented before God.
