HEIRS OF THE PROMISE

“Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham’s children. On the contrary, ‘It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.'”

Romans 9:7

Abraham went through a time of uncertainty with respect to who his heir would be. He did not want one of his servants named Eliezer to be his heir. God told him, “‘This man will not be your heir, but a son coming from your own body will be your heir’ He took him outside and said, ‘Look up at the heavens and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.’ Then he said to him, ‘So shall your offspring be.’ Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness” (Genesis 15:4-6).

Isaac was born even when the natural laws of maternity dictated that it was impossible. God’s divine Word came and rejuvenated Abraham and his wife Sarah. Therefore, Isaac’s birth was a miracle. That is how God works. He allowed Abraham to experience all of this so that he would understand that the way we relate to God is through faith. Through his faith Abraham was justified and he became God’s friend.

Isaac was a representation or ‘type’ of the Lord Jesus, whom the Father gave all things to. “Abraham left everything he owned to Isaac” (Genesis 25:5). The same way that Abraham’s servant prepared Rebecca, to whom he gave gifts and later took her to meet Isaac, the Holy Spirit has prepared the hearts of believers so they can have that personal encounter with Jesus.

Isaac and Rebecca, had been married for twenty years, but could not have children (Genesis 25:21). Isaac understood that as the authority of the family he could reverse any type of curse. He started to release the blessing and free his wife from the oppression of barrenness. God heard Isaac’s prayer and gave him not only one child but twins. We can open the heavens and release the blessing of God through prayer.

Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold, because the Lord blessed him. The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy. He had so many flocks and herds and servants that the Philistines envied him” (Genesis 26:12-14). The prosperity from God is whole and has a very important characteristic, as conveyed in Proverbs 10:22: “The blessing of the Lord brings wealth, and he adds no trouble to it.” When we are in the center of God’s will, we can enjoy the fullness of the divine blessing. God put Isaac in a place of honor by making him very powerful. This happens when the Lord exalts His children. An anointing of prosperity touches their lives, their homes, and their circle of influence. The promise of God for Abraham was that Isaac would have descendants. In his letter to the Galatians, Paul says, “He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit” (Galatians 3:14). The Word also says, “If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise” (Galatians 3:29). Lastly, it declares, “Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise. At that time the son born in the ordinary way persecuted the son born by the power of the Spirit. It is the same now” (Galatians 4:28-29).

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
An American mother discovered that her son had an innate talent for music and put him into a school for it. After studying and mastering music with all the teachers in his town, she took him to New York where a famous retired pianist resided. However, this pianist told her, “I do not accept students.” He refused the mother’s pleas, but she refused to give up. She told him, “We have come from far with hope in our hearts. Can you hear him play just once?” Exhausted by her insistence, the man agreed and the boy began to play the piano. The artist was surprised when he saw how talented the boy was; he was like an uncut diamond. He started to dream about instructing a student with world-class talent and decided to accept the young boy as his last student. He gave himself completely to the musical education of the boy, who became a great pianist and finally had the opportunity to play at Carnegie Hall. Without exception, each piece was followed by thunderous applause. Many threw their hats and flowers to the stage, until he was covered in a blanket of flowers. In the midst of the applause, the audience noticed the boy looking up towards the balcony. His eyes were fixed on a particular person. Full of curiosity the audience followed his gaze and saw a white-haired elderly man sitting in the balcony looking back at him. Very proud of his disciple, those sitting close to him heard him say, “Yes, the multitudes applaud, but he remained looking up. In the moment you put your eyes on fame or money, your fall will begin.”

God does not invest his time in anyone in vain, God is the teacher and you are his disciple. Think of yourself as that last disciple that the Teacher of teachers has accepted. Honor Him with your life, with your actions, and with everything that the Lord has entrusted to you.
