THE SECRET OF ELOQUENCE

“Moses answered, ‘What if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, ‘The LORD did not appear to you’?”

Exodus 4:1

Moses lived through many very difficult moments throughout his life. How many truly great speakers had there been in his time? God chose Moses, because there was nobody else shaped by God in the same way he had been. Although Moses stuttered in his speech, he became the most powerful orator, because every word that came out of his mouth was a powerful decree moving the spiritual realm. God told Moses that He would help him by telling him what to say and in this way backed up every one of Moses’ words. When Moses spoke the plagues began, and when he prayed they stopped. He was able to bring God’s justice upon the wicked as well as stop divine punishment. Through his words he divided the Red Sea in order for the people to walk on dry land. In the same way, through his words the sea drew back together, killing Pharaoh’s army. Through his words he made manna fall from heaven and God’s people were nourished for forty years in the desert. Through his words water came from the rock quenching the people’s thirst.

Moses knew very well the protocol of Pharaoh’s palace. He knew that he had full authority to send anyone he didn’t like to be executed. Moses knew his stutter was a great hindrance to speak with authority to Pharaoh, but the Lord already had the solution through his brother Aaron. “You shall speak to him and put words in his mouth; I will help both of you speak and will teach you what to do. He will speak to the people for you, and it will be as if he were your mouth and as if you were God to him” (Exodus 4:15-16). In this way, Moses had to trust in God to speak to Pharaoh. Moses became the most powerful man in Egypt because he spoke the very words of God. Later, in one of the Psalms it reads, “You turn people back to dust, saying, “Return to dust, you mortals” (Psalm 90:3). Afterwards, he says, “Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen trouble” (Psalm 90:15).

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
In the United States News and World Report Magazine on December 27, 1957, Billy Graham stated, “When I accepted Jesus Christ twenty years ago, in a crusade very similar to the one we are leading today, I walked to the front with four hundred other people. The next day, a columnist from a newspaper wrote that the conversion of all those people was merely the result of an emotional response and that no one would persevere. However, I know eleven ministers that are currently preaching the Gospel that came to Christ on that night. They were exactly as I was; crazy guys. Now, they are preachers. They consider that circumstance as a turning point in their lives, just as I do. I have found in the city of New York many men that are now directors of religious activities, who came to the Lord forty years ago by the preaching of Billy Sunday. One of the most outstanding persons is the Dr. Henry Van Dusen, the president of the Union Theological Seminary.” Although at the beginning of his ministry Billy Graham was not an eloquent preacher, there was something that impressed everybody; his honesty. He had traveled the whole world, preaching incessantly. One of his big contributions to Christianity in America has been his genuine defense of the reconciliation and integration between black and white; because of which, he has promoted this everywhere. He was also a personal friend of Martin Luther King Jr.
