“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”
Psalms 91:1
This prayer is a powerful example of what can take place when we determine in our hearts to make God our sole refuge. It is also something that we should confirm and declare with our mouths. Believing in His Word leads us to accept Jesus as our only Savior. He rescues us from the yoke of oppression of the adversary. Our old nature remains nailed to the Cross, where Jesus was crucified and we are clothed with a new nature that causes us to be formed in the image in our Lord and Savior. Through this process we become part of God’s family and we hide ourselves under the protective shadow of the Most High. There is no power that is above our God. The Lord pledges to send his angels to watch over us. In this way, He frees us from all wrongdoing, as he covers us with His grace, protects us with His Love, and gives us security in His presence. He will protect our home and our family, as well as our lives and our welfare with the power of the Blood of Jesus. In addition to all of this, His angels have the responsibility of protecting us at all times. We can crush the head of our greatest fear. When we cry out, He will always respond quickly.
After the forty days that our Lord Jesus Christ fasted, Satan tried to make Him act with His human impulses so that His eyes would stray from the Word of God. One of the tactics he employed to give his schemes greater subtlety was using a Psalm. “The devil led Him to Jerusalem and had Him stand on the highest point of the temple. ‘If you are the Son of God,’ he said, ‘throw yourself down from here. For it is written: For he will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone” (Luke 4:9-11; Psalm 91:11-12). But the response of Jesus was always according to the full Word of God. He stated, “It is written, you shall not tempt the Lord your God.” The divine protection is linked with our obedience to the Word of God. Adam and Eve disobeyed and they were kept out of Paradise. They came out from under God’s direct protection and as a consequence they remained at the mercy of the enemy.
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
This Psalm is attributed to Moses and in it he reveals the secret of his strength and courage. When we study the life of this remarkable man of God we find he wasn’t afraid of anything or anyone. He confronted what was, in his day, the most powerful governmental figure on the planet and didn’t need an army to do it! He was the one who set the agenda and not Pharaoh. It was Moses who determined what was going to happen and take place. It was as though he did have an army, an invisible one, supporting him in everything he did. Every word that was released from his mouth became a decree. What did Moses have to do to humble this proudest of kings with his trained and powerful army, to separate the violent waters of the Red Sea, and to guide three million Jews through the desert? There is only one possible answer. Moses lived in the shelter of the Most High.
