“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
Ephesians 6:17
The sword of the Spirit is the weapon God has given us as a means of attack. But what exactly is the sword of the Spirit? The sword of the spirit is the spoken Word of God! It’s not the mere action of “speaking the Word” that is our spiritual weapon; it’s the revelation and assurance of what God has spoken. The sword of the Spirit is our faith declaration, the revelation we have of God’s Word in our hearts. Romans 10:17 says: “Faith, then, is birthed in a heart that responds to God’s anointed utterance of the Anointed One.”
In the Bible, there’s two primary Greek words for “word.” The first is logos, which is the written Word of God, also known as the inspired Word of God, and Jesus, the living logos (John 1:1). The second is rhema, which is translated as “the spoken Word” (spoken clearly and vividly) also referred to as “scripture for personal application.” Rhema is birthed out of faith; and our faith is strengthened by what we consistently hear and say.
In Mark 5:28, the woman with the issue of blood; the Greek word in that passage was ἔλεγεν (elegen) which means “she kept saying.” In other words, it was a continual confession of what she believed. As she kept saying what she believed, her faith was strengthened and Jesus’s response to her was “Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be healed from your affliction” (verse 34).
It’s not enough to just read the Word, or quote the Word verse by verse, it’s the spoken Word, spoken out of what we believe in our hearts. The Word (sword) is the weapon the Holy Spirit has given us. The Holy Spirit infuses the Word that is spoken in faith with power, and we see the miracles manifested in our lives. But it comes back to what we consistently say; what is in our hearts is what comes out of us. What we see and what we hear (eye and ear gates) is what fills our hearts. The Word of God reminds us that we must give an account for every idle word that we speak (Matthew 12:36). The passion translation says: “…everyone will be held accountable for every careless word he has spoken.”
What we speak is determined by what is in our heart. The Word must be a continuous overflow of life coming out of our heart. The Word overflows out of our heart when our heart is filled to the overflow with the Word!
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
Jesus replied, “Let the faith of God be in you!” (Mark 11:22 TPT). The faith of God speaks things into existence. Throughout the entire Bible, we read about the patriarchs of faith, how they believed and spoke things into existence. From the very beginning, when the earth was without form; the Holy Spirit was hovering over the waters, God spoke, and things came into existence. We are God’s children and He expects us to be just like Him, “Be imitators of God in everything you do, for then you will represent your Father as his beloved sons and daughters” (Ephesians 5:1 TPT).
Since we’re called to be like Him, we must BELIEVE what God says, and SPEAK the word! When situations arise, we must immediately declare the rights God has already given us in Christ Jesus! When worry or anxiety tries to overwhelm you, you must SPEAK the Word that says Jesus already paid the price for your peace and wholeness, so you’re claiming your deliverance! Declare it with great assurance because it’s already yours! (Rachel Wela)
