DIGGING UP WELLS

Today’s Bible Verse

“Long before this time, Abraham had dug many wells. After he died, the Philistines filled the wells with sand. So, Isaac went back and dug those wells again. He gave them the same names his father had given them.”

Genesis 26:18 (ERV)

Digging Up Wells

Isaac is the son of Abraham, the great patriarch, the father of faith. Abraham’s walk with God afforded his posterity the provision to outlive a widespread famine. The known world was in scarcity and lack, and people were flocking to safety in the land of Egypt. In this context, God told Isaac to stay put and not go down to Egypt. It was a test of faith because the land was dry, and planting crops didn’t seem profitable.

Isaac obeyed. He remained where he was called, and he reaped one hundred times what he planted, becoming prosperous in the time of famine (Genesis 26). In the place of his calling, Isaac unearthed wells that had been dug by his father because they were filled with sand. Isaac dug the wells and gave each the same names his father gave them.

Something to Think About

In uncertain times, we can be tempted to go down to Egypt, a place outside of our calling, outside of God’s will for our lives. We rationalize that movement, as long as it is movement, is better than feeling stuck. So, we exert energy, and expend resources, and realize we essentially gained perspective and experience, but we made little progress or profit.

Isaac’s story teaches us that there is provision in the land where we’ve been called. We can sow and reap where we have been called. We can drink from wells provided to us by our fathers and mothers of faith—right where we are. The enemy tries to plug these wells by distracting us with chaos, tempting us to look for something new. Yet, the answer isn’t in the new; it’s in the again. The answer is in going deeper. Sometimes, wells of revelation need to be dug again, so we can experience the refreshing of God.

Wells of revelation have been dug by mighty generals in the faith, who have labored in the Word and prayer to bring the wealth of God’s truth to our lives. We can access the wells in our church by attending church and Life Group, reading Pastor Art’s and Pastor Cesar’s books, and experiencing the wonder of worship with Pastor Kuna. Go, my brothers and sisters and dig again. (Jonathan Vasquez)
