A Kidz Life Devotional

This Week’s Memory Verse

The Spirit of the Lord is in me!

Luke 4:18 (ICB)

Double Portion

Hey Kids!

Do you remember who our superhero is?  Yeah, you are right, Elijah!  What made him so great?  Was it all the awesome mind-blowing miracles he did? No way, the greatness in him was because he prayed all the time to God. That’s how he did all the miracles, only through God’s power!  Yeah, Elijah always asks God first for everything he needed.  He knew that when he prayed God hears and listens to him.  What about you?  Do you believe that God hears and listens to your prayer and your request?

Elijah was a really cool dude!  He didn’t only care about himself.  No, Elijah had the Spirit of the Lord on him, so he took the time to teach a person named Elisha all that he knew.  He taught him that God was his source of power and that if Elisha asks God for help, God will help him.  Elijah showed Elisha how to pray, listen, and obey God in everything he did and to serve God with all his heart.

Kids, do you see what is going on here?  Wow, Elijah was making a new superhero!  Yessss, God chose Elisha as the next superhero!  And Elisha obeyed God’s call and faithfully followed his leader Elijah everywhere he went.  He did not leave his side, he listened, respected, and did whatever his leader told him to do.  Elisha had a strong faith in God and a desire to serve God.  Elisha knew what God wanted him to do and he gave everything in him to obey God.

Can you guess what’s even more cool than all that???

When it was time for Elijah to go to heaven, Elijah asked Elisha what he wanted.  Guess what he asked for???  Not a new bike, a new phone, or a Nintendo Switch, or new shoes or clothes!  He asked for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit, double portion of God’s Spirit and power to continue the work that Elijah did!  Whaaat!!  Do you know what that means?  He was asking God for super-duper mega power to do even more unreal miracles.  Wowza!  Do you think God gave him what he ask for?  Read the Bible Reading and find out!

This super-duper power Elisha ask God for was not to be famous, or to have lots of friends, or that he would get a million likes!  No way, he wanted to help people to believe in God and to serve God.  His heart desired to make God famous so people would make God their friend and their God. And that is why he wanted a double portion of God’s power so that he could destroy the enemy’s power over the people.

Remember kids, the Spirit of the Lord is in you, and you are specially picked by God to do great and powerful things through your life.  He places people in your life to teach and show you God’s ways.  All you have to do is pray, pray, pray, listen and obey God and the leaders he has placed in your life like your mom, dad, pastors, life group leader, and teacher – those that follow God.  If you do this, you will be a super-duper mega-powerful superhero for Jesus just like Elisha!

This Week’s Pledge of Honor

I am a super-duper mega-powerful hero for Jesus because the Spirit of the Lord is in me!

This Week’s Bible Reading

1 John 5:14-15 (ICB)

We can come to God with no doubts. This means that when we ask God for things (and those things agree with what God wants for us), then God cares about what we say. God listens to us every time we ask him. So, we know that he gives us the things that we ask from him.

Luke 4:18 (ICB)

“The Spirit of the Lord is in me.
This is because God chose me to tell the Good News to the poor.
God sent me to tell the prisoners of sin that they are free,
and to tell the blind that they can see again,
God sent me to free those who have been treated unfairly.

2 Kings 2:1 – 11 (NLT)

When the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were traveling from Gilgal. And Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here, for the Lord has told me to go to Bethel.”

But Elisha replied, “As surely as the Lord lives and you yourself live, I will never leave you!” So they went down together to Bethel.

The group of prophets from Bethel came to Elisha and asked him, “Did you know that the Lord is going to take your master away from you today?”

“Of course I know,” Elisha answered. “But be quiet about it.”

Then Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here, for the Lord has told me to go to Jericho.”

But Elisha replied again, “As surely as the Lord lives and you yourself live, I will never leave you.” So they went on together to Jericho.

Then the group of prophets from Jericho came to Elisha and asked him, “Did you know that the Lord is going to take your master away from you today?”

“Of course I know,” Elisha answered. “But be quiet about it.”

Then Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here, for the Lord has told me to go to the Jordan River.”

But again Elisha replied, “As surely as the Lord lives and you yourself live, I will never leave you.” So they went on together.

Fifty men from the group of prophets also went and watched from a distance as Elijah and Elisha stopped beside the Jordan River. Then Elijah folded his cloak together and struck the water with it. The river divided, and the two of them went across on dry ground!

When they came to the other side, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me what I can do for you before I am taken away.”

And Elisha replied, “Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit and become your successor.”

10 “You have asked a difficult thing,” Elijah replied. “If you see me when I am taken from you, then you will get your request. But if not, then you won’t.”

11 As they were walking along and talking, suddenly a chariot of fire appeared, drawn by horses of fire. It drove between the two men, separating them, and Elijah was carried by a whirlwind into heaven.
