Today’s Bible Verse
And [Jesus] said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them.
Luke 2:49-50 (NKJV)
Our Father’s Business
If you are like me, you have read this scripture many times and thought, “How could Joseph and Mary lose Jesus?!” Were they not paying attention? Were they preoccupied with other things? Isn’t this such a natural reaction? Yes, He was left behind but what God is wanting us to understand is something that goes beyond the natural.
See, from a young age, Jesus understood the business of His father. I’m speaking about Joseph. He was a carpenter by trade and likely would have taught Jesus his trade. This would be how Jesus would sustain Himself financially, but Jesus had another revelation. Oh Lord, let us ALL receive this revelation! He was not going to be boxed in by what society said. He was not going to be defined by His career, nor allow anything to cloud His purpose.
He understood His Father’s business. Not Joseph’s business, but His Father in heaven. It was during this time that we find Jesus in the Temple. He was in the House of God, as we all should be. This is what impacted me about Jesus because even from the age of 12-years-old, He had a clarity as to what He needed to do and where He needed to be. When I was 12-years-old, growing up in a Christian home, I wanted to be a lawyer. Yes, I loved Jesus and I went to church but my Father’s Business was not yet MY business. An Uncommon Life
As a child of God, if you live your life engaged in your own business, you will miss out entirely on what He has planned for you. See, my dreams and desires were to be a lawyer, a police officer, a business owner and for much of my life, it was ALL about my business. And guess what? I would get upset if someone tried to get in my business! I remember when I first heard that my priorities were misaligned. It really caused a supernatural twitch in my heart. However, because I was willing to allow God’s Word to be the authority in my life, I allowed myself to have a change of heart. It wasn’t that God didn’t want me at the time to be a successful entrepreneur. He wanted me to understand that when I am ALL about HIS business, He will be all about MY business.
Our Kingdom purpose is tied to what Jesus is showing us in verse 49, “Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?”
Luke 2:50 (NKJV) states, “But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them.”
If there is one thing you must settle, it is this right here. People are not going to understand why you are going about your Father’s business. They may not support you, and they may not give you a high five and tell you how proud they are! But guess what, it changes nothing. They are not your provider, and they are not your God.
Jesus understood that His earthly father’s business could provide for him in the natural; however, His Father’s business would sustain Him for eternity. I encourage you today, to make a decision and be about the Father’s business. It’s about the Kingdom, it’s about winning the lost and making disciples. It’s about loving people back to God.
Today’s Declaration
I declare that I am a disciple that is ALL about my Father’s business! I will not compromise. I understand my purpose. I understand who I belong to. My God sustains me, provides for me, and has equipped me to be about my Father’s business. I am who His Word says I am. A disciple and a disciple-maker!
