THE POWER OF THE TONGUE

“If you keep talking, it won’t be long before you’re saying something really wrong. Prove you’re wise from the very start— just bite your tongue and be strong!”

Proverbs 10:19 (TPT)

To conquer in life, there’s an important thing you must overcome, which is your tongue. With it we bless and with it we curse. The Word of God says “But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison” (James‬ ‭3:8‬ ‭NKJV). The words we speak comes from our heart. When there is anger, strife, hurt, unforgiveness, insecurity or fear in our hearts, that’s what we convey through the words we speak. Those who are the closest to us are usually on the receiving end of those hurtful words. We usually react to situations, instead of responding with the love of God.

Those reactions can deliver some of the most hurtful words. The Word of God says, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Luke 6:45). Are there things in your heart that’s causing you to speak such negativity and hurt? We must allow the Holy Spirit to show us through the Word, why we speak the way we do; and allow the Holy Spirit to expose those areas of our heart so He can bring healing and restoration in every area of our heart.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
I have a son who is now 20 years old. As he was growing up, I really thought I was a great dad. I provided for him and loved him the way that I knew how. But there was one area where I was missing it. It was the way I spoke to him. I was very negative towards him with everything he did, never praising him for the things he did right. I criticized everything that he did wrong. For many years, I spoke to him very harshly and said many hurtful things. This negativity and hurt was how I saw myself. My insecurities and hurt from the past were what came through my words.

Several years ago, through the power of God and the work of the Holy Spirit, my heart was healed. God helped me to recognize and repent to my son for all the hurtful things that I had spoken over his life. Today, God has healed our relationship and brought us closer than ever. The Word of the Lord says in Deuteronomy 30:19, “I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live.” Today, I choose to speak blessing over my family.
