THIRST FOR LOVE

“Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, ‘I am thirsty.'”

John 19:28

History tells us that the people who were crucified went through many hours of agony. While on the cross, they would have felt a great desire for something to drink because of the dehydration the body experienced. Jesus was experienced this suffering and, in order that the prophecy would be fulfilled, expressed that he was thirsty. In that moment, his physical thirst was relieved by a sour liquid called vinegar; however, several passages of the Bible make reference to another type of thirst, the spiritual one. We can only satisfy this thirst when we come close to the finest, purist, and most exquisite, free, available fountain: JESUS, THE FOUNTAIN OF LIVING WATER.

He said it Himself, “…he who believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:35). In Revelation 21:6b the Apostle John says, “To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life.”

Spiritual thirst can be looked at from two perspectives. On the one hand, we can think of the void and need in the lives of people who have not yet given their lives to the Lord. On the other hand, we can think of how that need can be met. That is the thirst Jesus has every day for an army of committed people to rise up with the same vision He had: that of saving souls and making them into disciples. His will is that none would perish, but that all would come to repentance.

So, God calls us first to get close to Him so that He can fill our fountain and later, to become a channel through which others can quench their thirst.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
Every Sunday on my to church I had to pass by the front of a soccer stadium. I would see how people would form long lines from early in the morning to get the best seat in the stadium. One Sunday, I had an experience where a great compassion was awakened in me for the thousands of people there, the majority of whom did not know Jesus. I thought to myself that surely more people should be going to church rather than those stadiums. I later declared, “The day will come in which we will bring together more people in our church then those who go to a sporting event.” Ten years later we are seeing this declaration become a reality.

TODAY’S DECLARATION
“Each soul that I win for Jesus, is a drop of water that relieves His thirst.”
