So Elisha said to her, “What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?” And she said, “Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil.
2 Kings 4:2 (NKJV)
You Are the Jar Filled with Oil
This is an Old Testament story about a widow woman miraculously paying off her debt. The story begins in 2 Kings 4, where a woman is crying out to the Prophet Elisha for help because her husband (a prophet who served under Elisha) was dead and the creditors were coming to enslave her two children. In those days, creditors would enslave families until the debt they owed was paid off. So the Prophet Elisha asked the widow woman a question to pay off her debt.
Elisha asked her, “Tell me, what do you have in the house?” And the woman said, “… nothing in the house but a jar of oil.” So Elisha commanded her to bring as many empty jars and pour oil into them. The oil kept pouring into every empty jar until there were no jars left to pour into. The story goes on and is mentioned in verse 6, “… There is not another vessel, so the oil ceased.” With those vessels full of oil, she sold them and paid off the debt she owed.
God used simple jars of oil to bring a miracle to her house. This story is a type and shadow of our lives having the ability to bring God’s miracle and breakthrough to people around us. The jar is a representation of our lives and the oil is a representation of the Holy Spirit. The day we got born again, God poured His oil (which is His Holy Spirit and His Anointing) into us. As simple as our lives look, whether you are working a common job, or a stay home parent, or a school student, when the Holy Spirit fills your life, He now empowers you and gives the ability to bring God’s solutions to everyone. So our lives are jars filled with oil (His Spirit) which God can use to make an eternal impact on everyone we come in contact with everyday! (Walter Arguelles)
An Uncommon Life
In 2 Timothy 2:21 (TPT), the Apostle Paul uses a similar description about our lives being jars (containers; as worded in the TPT). It says, “But you, Timothy, must not see your life and ministry this way. Your life and ministry must not be disgraced, for you are to be a pure container of Christ and dedicated to the honorable purpose of your Master, prepared for every good work that he gives you to do.” Let’s take ownership of this scripture. When you see “Timothy’s” name in this verse, I want you to replace it with your name and read it out loud!
“But you, (YOUR NAME), must not see MY life and ministry this way. MY life and ministry must not be disgraced, for you are to be a pure container of Christ and dedicated to the honorable purpose of your Master, prepared for every good work that he gives you to do.”
Although our lives may seem so common on the outside, on the inside is what makes our lives uncommon. God poured into us His oil to fulfill His plan and purposes through our lives, making an eternal impact for the kingdom of God.
Today’s Declaration
Thank You, Lord, for the fresh oil being poured into my life, through Your Word, through my pastors, and through my leaders speaking into my life! My life is a vessel that is honorable, pure, and consecrated for the purpose of serving You! Lord, I yield myself to You and I expect that You will use my life TODAY to make an impact in someone’s life for Your Kingdom! AMEN
