YOU ARE WHAT YOU SPEAK

“A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgement for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Matthew 12:35-27

The power of the life of a man is found in the tongue. Our welfare on earth and security in the afterlife depends on what we express with our tongue. Although the tongue is one of the smallest parts of our bodies, it’s the one that decides where we will spend eternity. The Apostle James said, “But no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness” (James 3:8-9).

We were created to worship God. When Satan saw the intimate communion that men enjoyed with his Creator, he was full of envy and wanted to destroy that relationship. The devil used the human desire for self-centeredness as a channel of temptation for man to surrender to him. So, the devil shrewdly sold the idea of eating the forbidden fruit to become like God. Satan knew that if man accepted his proposal, we would be separated from God and would enter into his dark territory, subjecting man under his dominion because sin is the only thing that separated man from God. The Lord Jesus Christ taught that the only way to worship God, who is Spirit, is through the spiritual nature, and the only ones who possess that nature are those who have been born again. We do not worship any old god, but we worship the God who created heaven and earth; the One who created the universe, the Creator of every life, and the God who sent His Son Jesus Christ to save us.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

D.L. Moody shared this testimony, “I met a father of a family who was a businessman in New York. One day, when he arrived back from work, he found his wife in tears. ‘What’s the matter,’ he asked. ‘Our son is much worse than when you left him this morning. The doctor said that he is dying, and our son doesn’t know,’ the mother replied. The father went to his son’s room. As he bent toward his sin, he spoke softly to him, saying, ‘My son, are you aware that you are dying? It could even be as soon as tonight.’ Looking at his father face full of love, the son said, ‘Me? Dying? Am I dying? Tonight perhaps?’ The father began weeping with huge tears falling from his eyes. ‘Oh dad, don’t cry for me! When I die I will go to heaven, and when I arrive, I will go straight to Jesus. I will tell Him, ‘I have arrived because You have guided my way here.’

The son understood that we are pilgrims heading towards the heavenly home. Praise is our strength; it silences the devil’s voice. It delivers us along with those surrounding us. Everything that exists, everything that breathes, should praise the Lord. It’s good to praise Him throughout our day with our hearts, our mouths, and our intellect, for what we do on earth will affect eternity.
